Juvederm is one of several ways to restore facial volume. Compared to Botox, which relaxes muscles to reduce movement-related lines, Juvederm adds volume where it’s been lost. Hyaluronic acid binds to water, creating a gel-like substance that fills areas that have lost volume. It was first discovered in 1934 and has been used safely in medicine for decades, including as a joint lubricant before it became a cosmetic filler. Because it’s structurally similar to what your body already produces, results look natural rather than artificial, and if you’re ever unhappy with the outcome, an enzyme is available to dissolve it completely.

Your exact needs depend on genetics and how much volume you’ve lost in each area. We’ll customize your plan during your consultation rather than guessing from a chart. Our goal is never to overdo an area, we want a result that looks uniform and natural, not overfilled.
Injections typically take 30-45 minutes, with no required downtime, though mild bruising or swelling is possible. Most patients feel very little discomfort, we use a light hand, a gentle approach, and never rush. Topical numbing cream is available for anyone who wants extra comfort.
Some results are visible immediately. Because Juvederm draws in water, full results appear within 2 weeks, so we ask patients to wait the full two weeks before deciding if they’d like more product.
To minimize bruising, avoid blood thinners for 3 days before your injection, this includes fish oil, flax seed oil, multivitamins, and NSAIDs like ibuprofen, along with alcohol. If you take aspirin, Coumadin, or another prescribed blood thinner, talk to your physician about pausing it about 7 days out, if it’s safe to do so. We also ask that you avoid vaccines and dental procedures for 2 weeks before and after your appointment, let us know if you have a history of cold sores, and wait until you’re feeling well and off antibiotics before coming in.
For 24 hours after your appointment, avoid alcohol and anything that widens blood vessels, heat, direct sun, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise, since these increase bruising risk. A cool compress helps with swelling. Small bumps or needle marks usually resolve within hours. Avoid makeup for 4 hours. Arnica Montana and fresh pineapple (which contains Bromelain) may help shorten bruise duration. Avoid vaccines and dental procedures for 2 weeks after your appointment as well.
Lip injections come with a few extra considerations because the lips are a sensitive, highly vascular area. Most patients still walk out the same day with only minor swelling and bruising, but plan on a 4-day recovery window rather than a same-day-perfect result. Lips are one of the more sensitive areas to inject, so we always use numbing cream in addition to the lidocaine already in Juvederm.

Yes. Juvederm is made from a sugar your body already produces, so reactions are rare, and most side effects (minor swelling, small needle marks, brief bruising) come from the injection process itself rather than the product. As with any filler injection, there’s a rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion, where filler accidentally enters a blood vessel and blocks blood flow, your provider is trained to recognize and manage this immediately if it occurs. Very rarely, a granuloma or nodule can develop at the injection site weeks or months later, this is uncommon and treatable if it happens. Rare side effects are listed on Allergan’s website, and we’re always happy to answer questions during your consultation.
Avoid Juvederm if you have an active skin infection (including cold sores), a known allergy to lidocaine, a history of keloid scarring, a prior reaction to Juvederm, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
Yes, over 9 months to 2 years, and gradually, not suddenly. Once it’s fully broken down, you simply return to baseline, having prevented the aging process during that window. To maintain your desired appearance, you may want to retreat certain areas as needed, but skipping it never makes your skin worse than before you started.
Most patients love their results. If yours don’t feel quite right, we recommend reaching out to your injector to discuss, it’s most often because a conservative amount of product was used, and we can always add more. Juvederm binds to water to plump treated areas, so staying hydrated is good practice generally, but drinking excess water won’t meaningfully change your results.

Follow up immediately if you develop intense pain, draining, or extreme heat at an injection site, these are rare but can signal infection or an adverse reaction.
