Botox binds to nerve receptors in the muscle, blocking the release of a chemical called acetylcholine. With fewer muscle contractions, fewer fine lines and wrinkles appear. It’s especially effective on dynamic lines, the ones that show up when you move your face. Static lines, the ones still visible at rest, are harder to treat, but not impossible, consistent treatment over time can improve them. Starting earlier tends to produce better, more dramatic results.
Botox also has medical uses beyond wrinkle prevention, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, migraine headaches, and muscle spasms.
Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin all work the same way, blocking the nerve signal that causes muscle contraction, but they differ slightly in formulation. Injections typically take 10 to 15 minutes. Most patients feel very little discomfort, any anxiety tends to outweigh the needle itself, and most first-timers respond with some version of “that was all?” Numbing cream and ice aren’t usually necessary, but they’re available for anyone who’s especially sensitive to needles.
Minimize blood-thinning agents for 3 days before your treatment, this includes fish oil, flax seed oil, multivitamins, aspirin, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, and alcohol. Arnica Montana and a compound in pineapple called bromelain may help reduce bruising and shorten its duration if you do bruise.
For 4 hours after treatment, avoid lying flat, wearing hats or helmets, or applying makeup. For 24 hours after, avoid exercise, facials, steam rooms, saunas, massage, alcohol, and blood thinners unless your physician has prescribed them.
Most patients notice very little the next day. Results begin appearing around day 3, with full results visible by 2 weeks. We ask everyone to wait the full two weeks before deciding if they’d like a touchup, since it takes that long for Botox to fully settle.

Most side effects are minor and short-lived, temporary redness or swelling at the injection site (usually gone within 30 minutes), occasional bruising, or rarely, flu-like symptoms or a headache.
