botox vs dysport

If you’re trying to decide between Botox  and Dysport in Denver, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions we hear most from new patients, and the honest answer is that both are excellent options, they just work a little differently. Botox (also known as Botox Cosmetic) and Dysport are both botulinum toxin type A injectables that relax the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, but the formulation, onset time, and ideal use cases differ enough that the right choice depends on your goals and your face.

Here’s how they compare, so you can walk into your consultation already knowing what to ask.

How Are Botox and Dysport Different?

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) share the same active ingredient family, botulinum toxin type A, and both work by blocking the nerve signals that tell facial muscles to contract. That’s where the similarities end and the formulation differences begin.

Dysport has a smaller protein structure, which allows it to diffuse more broadly once injected, making it a natural fit for larger areas like the forehead. Botox, with its more concentrated molecule, tends to stay closer to the injection site, which works well for smaller, more precise areas like crow’s feet. That said, at Simply Injectables we generally recommend choosing one product and sticking with it rather than mixing or switching by area. Newer research suggests that frequent exposure to different toxin formulations can lead to tolerance over time, so consistency tends to produce better long-term results. Switching products occasionally is fine, but we typically don’t recommend rotating between Botox and Dysport visit to visit.

Which Lasts Longer: Botox or Dysport?

Most patients see results from both treatments lasting around three to four months, and the honest answer is that neither product reliably outlasts the other across the board. Some patients report Botox lasting slightly longer, into the five-month range, while others find Dysport holds up just as well. Individual results vary based on metabolism, muscle strength, certain medications, and the area treated, which is exactly why your provider tailors the product and dosage to you specifically rather than defaulting to one or the other.

How Fast Do Botox and Dysport Work?

Dysport tends to show visible results a bit sooner than Botox, often within two to three days, while Botox typically takes three to seven days for results to appear. That said, both products take about two weeks to fully settle, so we recommend booking your appointment two to three weeks before any big event. That gives your results time to develop and leaves room for any touch-ups if needed.

Do Botox and Dysport Cost the Same?

Pricing comparisons between Botox and Dysport can be confusing because the two are dosed differently. At Simply Injectables, Botox is priced at $12 per unit and Dysport at $4 per unit, but Dysport typically requires about three times as many units to achieve the same result. In practice, that means the total cost for a comparable treatment ends up about the same either way. Your provider will walk you through the actual unit count and price for your specific treatment area during your consultation.

Which One Should You Choose?

There isn’t a universal answer to whether Botox or Dysport is better. It depends on how quickly you want to see results, your treatment history, and how your face responds to each formulation. At Simply Injectables, we offer both products so the decision can be based on what fits you best, and once you’ve chosen, we generally recommend staying consistent with that product for the long term.

Where Can Botox and Dysport Be Used?

Both Botox and Dysport can be used across a wide range of treatment areas, far more than most people realize. Common uses include:

Face

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines)
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Brow lifting
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Lip flip (subtle upper lip enhancement)
  • Chin dimpling

  • Trapezius (trap tox/Barbie Botox for neck elongation and shoulder tension)

The right areas for you depend on your goals and anatomy. Your provider will walk you through which treatments make sense during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Neither is universally better. Dysport tends to diffuse more broadly and works slightly faster, while Botox offers more precision for smaller areas. The right choice depends on the treatment area and your individual goals.

In most cases, the two last about the same length of time, typically three to four months. Some patients notice Botox lasting slightly longer, but this varies by individual.

You can, though we generally recommend choosing one product and sticking with it. Newer research suggests that frequently switching between toxin formulations can lead to tolerance over time. If you’ve tried one and want to switch, your provider can help you transition and adjust dosing, but rotating between the two each visit isn’t something we typically recommend.

Dysport and Botox are dosed using different unit systems because of differences in formulation. It typically takes about two and a half to three units of Dysport to equal the effect of one unit of Botox, which is a measurement difference, not a difference in strength.

Both can be used effectively on the forehead. Rather than choosing a product by treatment area, we recommend picking the one that’s right for you overall and staying consistent with it over time.

According to Drugs.com, Botox and Dysport are both purified forms of botulinum toxin type A that work by blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, and dosages between the two products are never directly interchangeable.
