Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment made of deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body already produces naturally to help break down dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella destroys those fat cells permanently. Once a fat cell is gone, it cannot store fat again, which is what makes Kybella one of the few non-surgical treatments that delivers a lasting result rather than a temporary one.
Kybella was approved by the FDA in 2015 specifically for moderate to severe submental fat, commonly known as a double chin, and it remains the only injectable approved for this use.
The number of sessions depends on the amount of submental fat being treated and your individual goals. After treatment: Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness or numbness under the chin are common in the days following treatment. This is a normal part of how Kybella works, since it’s creating an inflammatory response that breaks down fat cells.
Visible improvement typically builds gradually over the weeks following each session, with continued results between sessions as your body clears the treated fat cells.

Yes. Kybella permanently destroys the treated fat cells, so once your treatment plan is complete, the results are intended to be lasting, as long as significant weight gain doesn’t cause remaining fat cells to expand.
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and redness in the treatment area. These are expected as part of how Kybella works and typically resolve within one to two weeks. Less commonly, patients may experience temporary uneven smile or muscle weakness in the jaw, which is why proper injection technique and an experienced provider matter.
