Yes. Voluma is made from a sugar your body already produces, so reactions are rare, and most side effects (minor swelling, small needle marks, brief bruising) come from the injection process itself rather than the product. As with any filler injection, there’s a rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion, where filler accidentally enters a blood vessel and blocks blood flow, your provider is trained to recognize and manage this immediately if it occurs. Very rarely, a granuloma or nodule can develop at the injection site weeks or months later, this is uncommon and treatable if it happens. Rare side effects are listed on Allergan’s website, and we’re always happy to answer questions during your consultation.
Avoid Voluma if you have an active skin infection (including cold sores), a known allergy to lidocaine, a history of keloid scarring, a prior reaction to Juvederm products, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have an autoimmune condition like Lupus, discuss it with your doctor before getting filler.

For 24 hours after your appointment, avoid alcohol and anything that widens blood vessels, heat, direct sun, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise, since these increase bruising risk. A cool compress helps with swelling (skip direct ice, it can burn skin). Small bumps or needle marks usually resolve within a few hours. Arnica Montana and fresh pineapple (which contains Bromelain) may help shorten bruise duration. Avoid vaccines and dental procedures for 2 weeks before and after your treatment.
Voluma is the first hyaluronic acid filler approved for use in the midface. It is also the first hyaluronic acid filler with an indication for 18 to 24 months.
Voluma uses a superior technology, called Vycross, to link more hyaluronic acids together, which leads to a longer lasting product that is smoother and gives more lift to an area.
Voluma is FDA approved for the cheeks and chin, and it’s within those areas that we see the most predictable, longest-lasting results, up to two years for many patients. Beyond that, we’ve also had great success using Voluma in areas it’s not officially indicated for, including the jawline, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and hands. Like with all medications, there are risks and side effects; however, Voluma is made from natural sugars that already occur in your body, so reactions are rare. Most of the side effects are caused by the injections themselves, not the Voluma.
Immediately after receiving your injections, please expect minor swelling, small visible needle insertion sites, and possible bruising. These are all short lived and many patients walk out of the office and go about a normal day.

Avoid drinking alcohol and activities that cause vasodilation (enlargement of blood vessels), such as excessive heat, direct sunlight, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. All of these have the ability to cause additional bruising.
If you develop swelling and bruising right away, use a cool compress on the skin.
Any lumps, bumps, or small needle sticks should subside within a few hours. It is OK to cover the areas with makeup after 4 hours if needed.
Arnica Montana and fresh pineapple, which contains Bromelain, are over-the-counter remedies that aid in the breakdown of red blood cells (bruising). These products may shorten the duration of bruising.
At Simply Injectables Denver, we are always available for questions and follow-up after your injections; however, waiting 2 weeks to see the end result is preferred before deciding if you need more treatment.
Although extremely rare, follow up immediately if you develop intense pain, draining, or extreme heat at an injection site. This could indicate an infection or reaction to the filler itself.
