A Complete Guide to Sculptra

Sculptra is made of poly-lactic-acid. Poly-lactic-acid is designed to increase volume over time, by stimulating collagen. If microneedling is the mechanical collagen stimulator, Sculptra is the chemical collagen stimulator.

Most patients require 2 vials for a full facial treatment. A full facial treatment includes temples, cheeks, nasal labial folds, marionette and back of jawline. Sculptra cannot be used around the mouth, lips and under the eyes.

The best results will require 6-8 vials total with two vials each treatment and each treatment spaced out about 4-6 weeks. The results are gradual and progressive, with full response at about 4-6 weeks post injection. The product lasts 18-24 months.

Pros

Great for patients just wanting a natural refresh. It works great and lasts a long time. Sculptra is an excellent alternative to fillers, providing a more gradual change over time, rather than the instantaneous result of dermal fillers. It’s a great product for athletic and thin patients who are losing facial volume with age and need general volume repletion.

Cons

Not great for patients looking for instant gratification. The procedure requires multiple treatments which means more recovery time. Each treatment has risks of bruising and swelling. Results are dependent on the amount of collagen restructured and cannot be guaranteed! It is not possible to reverse/dissolve Sculptra once injected.

Cost

$700/vial. $1400 per treatment.

2 vials = full facial treatment

3-4 treatments every 6 weeks or every 2 years for maintenance

5:5:5 Rule

Patients must massage the treated areas for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days. The 5:5:5 Rule is important to reduce any granulomas (small lumps under the skin). Following treatment patients may use cold compresses on the skin to minimize swelling. Direct skin contact with ice should be avoided. Patients should reduce the amount of UV exposure. They should wear a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher for at least a week following treatments.
